What is body mass index (BMI)?

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measure of whether your weight is commensurate with your height. It is calculated as weight (kilograms) divided by height squared (meters).

When using BMI (Body Mass Index) to evaluate body mass, the BMI value is usually divided into different health ranges. The following are general BMI classification standards, based on recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO):

1.Underweight:

  • BMI less than 18.5
  • This may be a sign of being underweight, which can lead to health problems including insufficient energy and reduced immune system function.

2. Normal Weight:

  • BMI between 18.5 and 24.9
  • This is the ideal healthy weight range and is associated with a lower risk of certain diseases.

3. Overweight:

  • BMI between 25 and 29.9
  • Being overweight may increase your risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other health problems.

4 Obese:

  • BMI equal to or greater than 30
  • Obesity may significantly increase the risk of a variety of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, bone and joint problems, etc.

These ranges are general guidelines, but please note that BMI is not a perfect indicator and cannot differentiate between the proportions of muscle and fat in your body composition. Therefore, for some special groups (such as athletes or the elderly), the interpretation of BMI may be somewhat limited.

Interpretation of BMI values should be combined with other indicators of physical health and professional advice from your doctor. If you have any questions about your health and weight management, it is recommended that you seek the advice of a physician or other professional healthcare provider.
